In September 2015, a 7-year-old named Alyssa received a worksheet from her teacher with a harsh note in red: “Stop writing your name in cursive. You have had several warnings.” The incident sparked debate after a photo of the worksheet was shared on Facebook.
While teachers’ instructions are important, discouraging Alyssa from practicing cursive seems unreasonable. Cursive writing requires focus, patience, and practice—skills that should be encouraged, not shamed. Alyssa’s effort deserved praise, not reprimand.
Fostering a love for learning is crucial, and adults play a key role in supporting children as they explore new skills. Rather than discouraging creativity and curiosity, teachers should nurture a child’s willingness to learn and grow.
