Turkey has unveiled its first domestically built hypersonic missile, the Tayfun Block-4, at the International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF) 2025 in Istanbul.
Developed by Turkish defense company Roketsan, the missile is capable of traveling at speeds exceeding Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound, at low altitudes.
This milestone places Turkey among a select group of nations with the technology to produce hypersonic weapons, highlighting the country’s growing defense capabilities.
The Tayfun Block-4 is an upgraded version of Turkey’s Tayfun short-range ballistic missile, first tested in 2022.
At 6.5 meters long and weighing around 2,300 kilograms, the missile is designed for rapid deployment from mobile platforms, enhancing its flexibility and survivability.
Equipped with advanced navigation systems, it has a range of over 800 kilometers and offers high accuracy, with a circular error probable (CEP) of just 5 to 10 meters.
Its high speed and maneuverability make it difficult for existing air defense systems to intercept, providing Turkey with a strategic advantage in the region.
This development is expected to have significant implications for regional security, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean, where tensions are high.
The Tayfun Block-4 missile underscores Turkey’s commitment to enhancing its military self-reliance and its capacity to shape defense dynamics in the region.
