REAL BREAKING NEWS:
Massachusetts Sheriff Arrested on Extortion Charges
Sheriff Steven Tompkins, 67, of Suffolk County (Boston area), was arrested by federal authorities in Florida.
He faces two counts of extortion, accused of pressuring a local cannabis company into selling him stock during its 2020 IPO preparations.
According to prosecutors, Tompkins used his influence—linked to a sheriff’s department job placement initiative—to coerce the sale. He wired $50,000 from his retirement account to the company, and later demanded a full refund even as the stock’s value declined. Evidence includes five checks marked as “loan repayment.”
He previously faced ethics issues in 2023 around nepotism and misuse of department resources. If convicted, he could face up to 40 years in prison, supervised release, and a $500,000 fine
