James Carville, the veteran Democratic strategist behind Bill Clinton’s 1992 victory, has delivered a blunt message that’s causing waves in the party. He believes former Vice President Kamala Harris faces long odds in any future presidential bid.
Carville’s opinion carries weight. Few strategists have seen more political rises and falls than him.
On his Politics War Room podcast, Carville said Harris is unlikely to play a role in the 2028 Democratic nomination fight, despite speculation after she declined to run for California governor.

He argued that Democrats want to move past the 2024 election, where Harris, despite major support, fell short. “Anybody that had anything to do with 2024, the party wants to move on,” Carville explained.
That message extends beyond Harris. He cautioned Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, her running mate, saying his future in national politics may also be limited.
Carville stressed his comments weren’t personal but based on political reality. He praised Harris’ résumé but said her campaign failed to clearly sell voters on change.
Looking to 2028, the Democratic field is already shifting. While some doors may close, others are opening.
