Mack’s horrific life or death choice which could finally be the end for him in Emmerdale

The fact that Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) didn’t feature at all in Friday’s episode of Emmerdale left fans fearing that John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) had killed him.
On Thursday, Mackenzie managed to leave the bunker John put him in two weeks ago. He got above ground, but was then found by his captor.
Happening alongside Mack’s search for freedom was Aaron Dingle’s (Danny Miller) escape from the creepy cottage. He had been drugged by John, who had found out about Aaron sleeping with Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley). Aaron ended up in the woods, heard Mackenzie shouting his name, and also found the entrance to the underground lair.
John was forced to choose between leaving Mack alone in the woods or tending to Aaron, who was in an incredibly bad way. Mackenzie pointed out that if John is so passionate about saving people, he should go and help his husband. John grabbed the brick near Mack, hit him with it, and ran to Aaron.
Amazingly though, Mack had survived another attack from John Sugden. He staggered through the woods and found a road. For a very brief moment, it felt like his nightmare was coming to an end.
He fell to the floor just as a van approached. He tried to explain to the driver that his friend needed help but in another dark twist, the person who had found Mackenzie was John.

The complex character had an axe in his hand, but the episode ended before we could see what happened next. With Friday’s episode primarily focusing on Aaron recovering from being spiked, fans couldn’t wait to tune into today’s instalment, hoping they would learn an update about Mack.
And they did.
After Aaron attempted to run out of the house, he was ushered back inside once again. John provided Aaron with another drugged glass of water and encouraged him to rest in bed.
By this point, Aaron had found Mack’s phone among John’s belongings. He absolutely knew he was in danger, so needed to think carefully about his next steps. He drank the water but immediately threw it back up once John left to run an ‘errand’.

Said errand was visiting Mack in the bunker. He was alive, but chained up again.
Mackenzie listened to John as he commented on how his relationship with Aaron is better than ever. He then confirmed that they’d no longer be seeing each other, which left Mackenzie terrified.
John had no intention of killing Mack, but he had reached a decision on what to do about him, and it involved letting Mack choose what happens next.
He handed him a syringe and explained that if Mackenzie wants to put himself out of his misery, he can inject himself with the drug, and drift off into a very deep sleep.

A completely disturbing prospect. This time, Mack couldn’t get inside John’s head to try and get him to think differently – his mind had been made up. He climbed up the ladder and left Mack in a complete state.
What followed next was John finding Robert in the woods. He knocked his brother out, and then discovered Aaron by a gorge. He had gone walking to try and find the bunker again, but wasn’t successful this time.
As the showdown ensued between John, Robert and Aaron, Mackenzie was still shouting for help. The problem this time round though, is that he knows Aaron is in a bad way because of the drugs, and that John is more determined than ever before to ensure he isn’t found.
Under the impression no-one else knows about John, it left Mackenzie seriously wondering whether he should use the syringe.
The episode ended with Robert witnessing John throw himself and Aaron off a gorge. Prior to this, Robert briefly discovered that John might have something to do with Mack’s sudden disappearance as well.
If Aaron wakes up with memory issues, or doesn’t survive this, it will leave Robert as the only person with a slim chance of finding Mack.
But will he?
And if so, what state will Mackenzie be in if he’s found?
